Insurance in Florida
Minimum auto liability required
| Bodily injury, per person | Not required |
| Bodily injury, per accident | Not required |
| Property damage | $10,000 |
| Personal injury protection (PIP) | $10,000 |
| Fault system | No-fault |
Florida requires $10,000 PIP and $10,000 property damage liability. Bodily injury liability is not required for most private passenger vehicles, which is unusual among large states.
Worth knowing
- PIP pays 80% of reasonable medical expenses up to $10,000, but only if you get initial treatment within 14 days of the crash.
- Without an emergency medical condition diagnosis, PIP benefits are capped at $2,500 rather than $10,000.
- Because bodily injury liability is optional, an at-fault driver with minimum coverage is personally liable for injuries they cause.
- Repeal of no-fault has been proposed repeatedly. SB 522 and HB 769 both died in committee on 13 March 2026, so PIP remains required.
- Drivers convicted of DUI must carry bodily injury liability of at least $10,000 per person and $20,000 per accident.
