Worth knowing
- New York requires three coverages, not one: liability, $50,000 PIP, and uninsured motorist. That is more than most states.
- Uninsured motorist coverage at 25/50 is mandatory and cannot be rejected.
- PIP at $50,000 is among the highest required in the country. Many no-fault states require far less.
- Supplementary uninsured/underinsured motorist (SUM) coverage is optional but widely recommended, since the required UM limits are low.
- To sue for pain and suffering you must meet the state's serious injury threshold. Soft tissue injuries alone usually do not qualify.
- The DMV monitors coverage electronically. Even a short lapse can suspend your registration.
